Effective Recovery: A Response to Cyberattacks

February 05, 2024 - Anida Latam

We are close to the arrival of March, a month that in terms of cybersecurity generated a lot of noise last year when for the first time and according to an international study by an Israeli company, Chile became the fourth country with the highest number of attempted cyberattacks in the world with more than 4,245 attempts in the first quarter alone.

Today, IBM figures show that only 19% of companies that have suffered successful ransomware attacks have been able to recover their data without having to pay the ransom demanded by the cybercriminals, and this is where the ability to recover the hijacked information gains strength.

This recovery becomes more challenging in the face of the sophistication of the attacks. Early ransomware attacks demanded a ransom in exchange for the encryption key needed to regain access to the data. Today, we are talking about double and triple extortion data hijacking, the former adding the threat of stealing the victim's data and leaking it on the Internet; while the latter threaten to use the stolen data to attack the victim's customers or business partners.

Today, there are also hidden figures associated with ransom payments, ascompanies are reluctant to disclose ransom payments made. However, there is evidence that ransom demands have grown to seven- and eight-figure amounts, with ransomware attacks estimated to cost victims a total of $30 million in 2023, according to a cyber threat report from our partner Acronis.

In addition to the increase in cyber-attacks, the sophistication of the threats and the charging of millions of dollars to ransom information, "currently nine out of ten organizations in the country are not adequately protected to face a cyber-attack or serious cybersecurity event", according to César Pallavicini, leader of Chiletec's Cybersecurity Department, according to the newspaper El Mercurio.

"We have a fertile scenario for cybersecurity threats to continue to wreak havoc in Chilean companiesin 2024, regardless of their size or industry. What we saw in 2023 will continue to increase if we do not take the measures, actions and tools that the market has today to minimize the effects of the damage caused by ransomware."

Guarantee continuity in the shortest possible time

Ransomware attacks should be considered in the same way that a natural disaster is perceived, so recovering quickly is a necessity "in the same waythat Chile has been prepared over the years to face disasters such as earthquakes or tsunamis, today it is necessary to create the capabilities to become a resilient country in the face of growing and sophisticated cyber threats" mentions Mario
Martínez Pedreros, commercial manager of Anida Latam.

Like a natural disaster, recovering from any ransomware attack can be complicated. For this reason, it is important to develop protection strategies not only at the corporate level, but also as a National Policy that focus on rapid recovery and create real opportunities to avoid paying ransom.

"At Anida Latam and hand in hand with our partners we have effective data recovery functionalities that allow to give continuity to the operations of the companies in the shortest possible time: performing replicas from backups, recovering from the storage snapshot, recovering from the fast execution repository and developing failover and failback functionalities."

However, effective recovery is not a total solution to the ransomware problem, but a proper recovery strategy will allow organizations to be better prepared and more confident to take on any extreme situation.

"At Anida Latam we have a SOC, NOC and a set of professionals ready to protect organizations against cyber threats, through a broad spectrum of managed services in cybersecurity, including: 24/7 security monitoring; threat detection and incident response; managed antivirus and antimalware; protection against denial of service attacks and among others" highlights Martínez Pedreros.
